On Unravel,
a live album recorded at the New York City studio, the
Magic Shop, Amelia’s
Dream ably strides the fine lines of rock genres. Amelia
Gerwitz’s vocals shine on these tracks, except a
few times when it veers a little too far down the “country” road,
even if it might be a rocky country road. Still, the album
is a nice mixture of uptempo rockers and wistful ballads,
and there’s nary a lull from start to finish.
Unravel is
well produced, features tight playing, and is pleasantly
unpredictable. Halfway through the album, the gentle “Sandcastle” gives
way to the alternative guitar sounds of “Only on
the Inside,” only to reverse course back to the ballad “Before
Your Time.” The 13 tracks here showcase the broad
expanse of Amelia’s Dream’s songwriting tableau.
