Navigating the highways and byways of
jazz-rock, synth-pop, and trip-hop, Boston-based Amun Ra’s
second album, A Thousand Ticking Clocks, offers
eleven rather eclectic tracks in which Emily Shirley’s
ethereal vocals float casually above the band’s rhythm
and melodies. It’s quite jazzy but accessible—think
Beth Orton, but sunnier.
A number of tunes on A Thousand Ticking
Clocks are laden with synthesizer parts courtesy
of Neil Larson, and meld an 80’s pop sound with
more sophisticated jazzier elements. And songs like “Unwind” infuse
Misha Rutman’s guitar rhythms and world music beats.
The album remains strong from start to finish, and holds
up well upon repeated listens.
