Raptorgnosis is the follow-up to Jack Foster III’s
Jazzraptor. Joining Foster on the album are Trent
Gardner and Robert Berry, both of whom also produced
the effort. The album might remind listeners of the
80’s progressive “supergroup” Asia,
as the songs range from tight and compelling rockers
to tamer ballads. Like Asia, the trio here seems
to seek an identity beyond their progressive roots
and into the world of corporate power pop.
The lush production and solid, guitar-driven sound
of “Ebb and Flow” segues into the acoustic
ballad “Heaven and Earth” and then back
to one of the album’s hardest rockers, “Koan,” with
its chorus, “God is a question, God is a page;
God is an answer, God is a story,” etc. Lyrically,
the album seems to embrace Christian values, as does,
perhaps, the album’s title itself. Progressive
rock fans with similar sensibilities might be most
intrigued by Raptorgnosis.
