It’s hard to believe that Matthew Genovese still
attends high school in his hometown of Toronto. Then
again, some of the influences heard in his music, like
Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang, were big-time acts
at a similar age. Genovese’s debut, Today!
Today! Today!, suggests a similar talent that focuses
less on guitar wizardry and more on songwriting.
On the album, Genovese seamlessly weaves blues, rock,
and funk into twelve tracks that range from searing
rockers to sentimental ballads. Throughout, the lyrics
suggest a songwriting far beyond his years, not just
for the material (which tackles loves affairs, sexual
relationships, etc.) but for their tone and expression.
Genovese’s vocal style is one cut from the same
cloth as Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, and suits his
material well. Today! Today! Today! demonstrates that
Genovese is wise and gifted beyond his years.
