Dry
Clothes for the Drowning by Pinkeye D’Gekko is
an album that’s a little hard to get a handle on. It
begins with a series of hard rockin’, foot stompin’ blues
rockers. The titles of the tunes bear this out: River Boat
Queen, Girls of Arkansas, etc. The sound on the first half
of the album is eerily reminiscent of the Georgia Satellites
(remember them?), and, in fact, the band is now touring with
and opening for iconic southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd on
their current U.S. tour.
Halfway
through the album, though, Pinkeye D’Gekko
pulls a surprise with The Poet, a tender ballad with female
backing vocals, followed by the up-tempo pop-centric See
You Again, as catchy a tune as you’re likely to find.
Slowly but surely thereafter the boogie woogie picks up again
and the house is once again rockin’.
