For
those who think shoegazing bands are passé, think
again. San Francisco Bay Area-based Sciflyer foregoes easy
pop hooks and commandeering vocals for a guitar-driven
ethereal sound that draws in more sophisticated listeners
who like their rock without the schlock. Though the EP
contains but five songs, they’re rather lengthy.
The album times out at a little more than a half hour.
Sciflyer’s
layered guitar sound is hypnotic to say the least. It draws
you in with rhythmic musical phrasing; each of these tunes
has its own distinct sound: some mellow, some with a bit
of an edge, but all equally compelling. The Age of Lovely,
Intimate Things is a relaxing, agreeable listen, and
music is tight and in-sync—not too much of a surprise
considering guitarist Steve Kennedy and bassist Kim Oberly
are married to one another.
