Tillis’s album, Hearing Crickets, features an array
of guitar-driven tunes (and the occasional mandolin-driven
ones). The Tillis men (David on guitar, Sean on bass, and
Michael on Drums) adeptly weave their way through blues,
fusion, rock, bluegrass, gospel and even a rather “mitable” version
of Santana’s inimitable Soul Sacrifice.
Though
the CD sleeve looks nice and polished, producing lyric
sheets and acknowledgement info, etc., it doesn’t
seem to mention the relationship among band members, but
methinks they’re brothers. Me also thinks they’re
from Florida. Whatever the case, this album is an engaging
one for those who like fine guitar work, accomplished musicianship
and a variety of styles. And though the songs carry a broad
range, the common thread lies in the voice of Americana.
