One of shows I get to run sound for every once in a while is a Hip-hop improv night, with a live back-up band. It’s very entertaining! When I started working those shows I couldn’t handle the style of music; however, over time I warmed up to it and I learned to appreciate it a bit more. Listening to Young Shorty’s self-titled album was an interesting change to the normal bunch of CD’s I get to listen to. I honestly had a difficult time listening to the album all of the way through. The language isn’t the best in the world, by any means. There is a notice on the cover, “Parental Advisory Explicit Content.” That should read “LOTS OF BAD LANGUAGE!”

I don’t know how old Young Shorty is, but he is a talented kid, assuming he writes his own words. The album was well recorded, filled with some very well-done tracks and beats. If Shorty can establish an audience that can tolerate the amount of bad language, he will see some success. But, I have seen a lot of independent hip-hop/rap artists get up there, very close to getting something big and then throw it all away with ego and language. This album has a nice flow, good variety of beats, and should keep people in to it from start to finish.

Favorite Track: 2, “Dayz Roll By”
