Explosions In The Sky: Welcome, Ghosts
Click here to download MP3 file
Thirty seconds is all you'll need to believe in the tragedy-turned-majesty of 'All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone', Explosions In The Sky's long-awaited fourth album. The hands-over-your-face, drop-to-your-knees opening track is only the beginning of the dominating brilliance of this record. Recorded by John Congleton (The Roots, The Mountain Goats) at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota, the album is a massive leap forward, showcasing a broader instrumental range and their most focused, efficient songwriting to date. It's also within arm's length of matching the overwhelming glory of their legendary live shows, trading in the crystalline production of 'The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place' for a paint-peeling intensity that blurs the lines between studio and live performance.

School of Seven Bells: Connjur
Click here to download MP3 file
Like many bands before them, School of Seven Bells were born as the result of a late-night revelation. Benjamin Curtis connected with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza in 2004 while their bands—Secret Machines and On-Air Library!, respectively—were on tour. While watching PBS at 3am, Alejandra caught a show about the School of Seven Bells: a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ‘80s. The idea of seven minds working as one appealed to her, as did the phrase’s cryptic musicality, and a creative spark ignited.

Hey Ocean: Vagabond featuring Shad K
Click here to download MP3 file
Often described as one of Canada’s best up-and-coming acts, Hey Ocean is a young band with an extraordinary talent for blending various musical styles into a brand of infectious pop that is uniquely their own. Aside from the skillful delivery of their music, what sets Hey Ocean apart is the spirited character they bring to the stage. Four mischievous personalities combine to form a dynamic live presence that keeps concertgoers captivated and on their feet. In fact, live performance has been an integral part of what the band calls their “natural growth.” But what began as a very casual musical partnership between friends has, in less than four years, morphed into one of Canada’s most successful independent bands.

Paper Route: Empty House

I was tired. There was just this lingering sense of exhaustion in the summer of 2004. I was tired of false starts. Tired of dreaming. Tired of being jaded. Tired of being tired. So it seems fitting that this story begins underneath my bed. You may picture me crawling below my mattress, but in reality my bed is about 6 feet above the ground-enough space for a small iBook and some cheap monitors. When I couldn't sleep, I'd descend my steps and make music all night. Some bands have LSD, others have cocaine, and our drug of choice seemed to be insomnia. I programmed, played bass, accordion, synths and even snuck into an undisclosed location masquerading as a music student to record piano. JT Daly, a close friend and old band mate, started coming over to sing, drum, and play bells. We had always dreamed about doing a project together and finally it was becoming a reality. After a month or so went by, Andy Smith, another close friend and ex-band mate who lives above me, started coming downstairs and contributing vocals, guitar, harmonica, and some synths. A band had naturally formed between the three of us and we were making music together, once again.

Cale Parks: Some Sew, Some Find
Click here to download MP3 file
A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Sparklace stands as a more immediate album than its predecessor focusing on songs with a pop structure whereas Parks previous output was more ambient and minimalisitc. Recorded in his home, every sound is original. If there is a drum sample, it is from Parks drum set. The vibraphone is sampled as well.

Kemado Records is proud to announce the latest release from renowned Boston singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler: Little Hells. On her fourth solo album, to be released on March 3, Marissa Nadler finds multiple ways to envelop the listener in splendid gauzy moods without becoming monochromatic. “The songs take on different personalities at different points in time,” says Nadler. “If a song is good, you should be able to do it in any style and transform it, take a risk and have some fun."

Gregory Paul: Star Crossed Again
Click here to download MP3 file
After finally arriving at a seamless blend of pop with roots, ambient, and post-modern influences, Gregory Paul plunges headlong into his roots side -- and mortality -- on his latest disc. Delicate electronic atmospheres float over plucking banjo and rusty guitar like mist over Appalachian slopes, while Paul's restrained wail seems to carry all the history and sorrow that one imagines is soaked into the ground of that fabled setting. As inventive as it is, though, this isn't old-time music for dilettentes. When Paul sings "a grain of truth on which to stand," he sounds weary from the wisdom of knowing where we're all going to end up someday, the ground of the title. By focusing on narratives outside his own experience, Paul hits a more powerful universal chord and, ironically enough, leaves us with a most life-affirming work.

Medeski Martin & Wood: Free Go Willy

The Radiolarian Series - named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons - is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release the music. The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums. Check out "Free Go Lily", the first single from Radiolarians I, via the link above.

M83: We Own the Sky (Maps remix)
Click here to download MP3 file
The idea of youth – wasted, gilded or otherwise – has always featured prominently in M83's music. "I loved being a teenager," says Anthony Gonzalez, who is M83. "That's when I discovered music and started to take drugs and party with my friends." That time of discovery – and of course the era in which Gonzalez was a teenager – greatly impacted the making of "Saturdays = Youth." "On this record I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed with this period of the Eighties," Gonzalez explains. This free download is part of a split 7 inch remixed by Maps. One side features the "M83 Mix" of Maps' "To the Sky" (from last year's We Can Create), while the other features the "Maps Mix" of M83's "We Own the Sky", a track from the new LP. Astronauts of Antiquity: Supa Soul
Click here to download MP3 file
New York’s Astronauts of Antiquity describe themselves as “urban-electro-organica.” Owing to this description, the band employs an arsenal of instruments ranging from a psychedelic Rhodes keyboard to eastern sitars and sarods played over a bed of synths and creative sound designs. The vibes range from danceable grooves a la JAMIROQUAI or THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES to retro soul like ERYKAH BADU and laidback lounge like ZERO 7 or THIEVERY CORPORATION. The album as a whole is permeating with a pulsing energy that blends the best elements of funk, electro, trip-hop and loungey jazz.

O + S: We Do What We Want To
Click here to download MP3 file
So what was the binding element for O+S, the musical collaboration between Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art in Manila) and Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero)? Location? Friendship? Or perhaps, a mirrored love of music, sprinkled with some good ol' fashioned timing? Their debut is a melodious reverie that thrusts forward with the help of the constant thump of drum loops, shifting from acoustic guitar and angelic coos to plodding piano, tinkling bells and a mélange of unidentifiable voices. Fink's celestial vocals float along like a cloud, ever so gently peeking in and out on cue. The production prowess of Michael Patterson (Beck, Notorious B.I.G., Ladytron) helped stitch the jagged collage into a seamless artistic composition. The result is a beautifully haunting collection that would make Angelo Badalamenti proud. "We listened to a lot of David Lynch soundtracks, 10cc and old 4AD records," confesses Fink. "I was looking for this balance of light and dark. You don't know why it is dark because it is actually very light sounding. That is what I was going for," she adds.

Nancy: Keep Cooler
Click here to download MP3 file
Nancy is not not just one girl. They are a six-piece band hailing from Brazil, which may or may not be 2009's Camden Town. But that doesn't matter, especially if you look at how their upcoming album was born. The band's first full-length is the work of exchanged e-mails, late night AIM action, swapping Garage Band vocals, guitar parts, and a couple of transatlantic flights. While Camila (the woman in the band) carried her laptop from Uruguay to London, Praxis wore flip-flops to work almost everyday in Rio de Janeiro. Months later, they regrouped for two weeks of staying-up-all-night recording sessions in Brasília, Brazil's modernist capital.
